The Full “Best of 2011 Music” List
Posted by: | CommentsThank you for checking this. For each band, I have a hyperlink to a cool clip, sometimes two. My top 4 (Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Radiohead, and Wilco) all took turns shuffling atop all else. Helplessness Blues was my favorite in the end. I hope all of your existential crises turned out well like mine. Happy new year. Let’s catch a show soon.
2011 Best
FatTriGuy
Again, this was a fantastic year for music, and I have been on a whirlwind of gaining music and listening to most of it, and really skipped a few genre’s this year from super indie to a little dubsteppy to Hard Core Gangsta Rap (which still proves to be in my blood).
I had to devise out a different plan because I can provide a top 10 total, but thought that I would need to also include a couple other albums that would make the “top 10″ , but there was just too much music for it to be limited to “just a top 10″
As always, thanks to Gorilla vs. Bear, Jenny Eliscu, Sirius XMU and Pitchfork! Unfortunately, Pitchfork knows me quite well so most of you have more than likely heard of these, but maybe there is a few that you all can check out. BTW, you people need to check these out, and I would like some dialog after we get the full list as to what some of your thoughts are on the picks as well as what others thought of your picks (thinking about the horrible, horrible picks the past few years). :-)

2011 Music
This will go down as one of the more underrated years of recent memory. There’s nothing profound, nothing that breaks the mold in any fantastic way, but there’s a whole lot of really solid albums. Three of my Top Five are sophomore albums that delivered more than I ever hoped, and the other two are veteran bands proving they’re not finished making outstanding music. To me, they’re all obvious picks. Without further ado:
Top 20 (Favorite Songs in Parentheses)
- Bon Iver, Bon Iver (Holocene, Perth, Calgary)
- Fleet Foxes, Helplessness Blues (Helplessness Blues, Bedoin Dress, Battery Kinze)
- Radiohead, King of Limbs (Separator, Codex, Give Up the Ghost, Little By Little, The Daily Mail)
- Wilco – The Whole Love (Born Alone, Open Mind, One Sunday Morning, The Art of Almost)
- Real Estate – Days (All the Same, It’s Real, Out of Tune, Green Aisles)
- The Decemberists – The King is Dead (Rise to Me, Down By The River)
- Beirut – The Rip Tide (Goshen, Port of Call, Santa Fe)

I have been lazy about finding new bands and listening to new music — all established bands except one. here is my top 5 from 2011.
1. Fleet Foxes, Helplessness Blues
2. Bon Iver, Bon Iver
3. Radiohead, Lotus Flower
4. Kurt Vile, smoke rings…
5. Wilco, Whole Love
Chris Souza
SOUZA Top 10 for 2011
- Justin Townes Earl – Harlem River Blues
Intrinsically confident and refreshingly sonic gospel-country-blues/rock.
- Real Estate – Days
There is a whole world to explore in there; it’s very meditative.
- Girls – Father, Son, Holy Ghost
- Stephen Malkmus – Mirror Traffic
- Bright Eyes – The People’s Key
- Destroyer – Kapuut
- Thurston Moore – Demolished Thoughts
- Rangers – Pan Am Stories
- Fucked Up – David Comes to Life
- Spectrals – Bad Penny
Souza Hopes for 2012:
- Thurston Moore plays electric, he brings back Lee Ranaldo, and he stays the course on keeping Kim Gordon away.
- A guitar band resurgence, please (a perennially misplaced hope).
- Animal Collective somehow outdo themselves on anticipated 2012 release.
Allison Grinter
It’s not a list, per se, but I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that any list without at least due consideration paid to
Kimbra’s “Vows”,
Maia Vidal’s “God is My Bike”,
Lykke Li’s “Wounded Rhymes”
Drake’s “Take Care”
Yellow Ostrich’s “The Mistress” (technically 2010, but it’s new to me.)
Michael Lehmann

Been a While
Posted by: | CommentsYes, I am lazy… that is the point of this darn website! I am “wanting” to change that!
First, the bad news, that heel issue that has been bugging me for a while, which has been one of the main reasons of my decline in activity (working out)… well, it was/is a heel stress fracture. This caused me to miss the Big D Half Marathon, the Rock’n'Roll Half Marathon, and my first Tri of the season (CAPTEXTRI). Disappointed, yes, of course I am, but not so much that it has got me down! I just needed rest and some relaxation, which is always nice!
Now the first excuse, work, it has been busy (always good), but keeping me from also working out.
Good News, in terms of weight loss and diet; I have stayed very constant over the past few weeks with minimal working out and some REALLY bad diet decisions! So that is good for when I do get back into hard working out and running! Texas Longhorn 70.3 here I come!
More excuses: moving, selling house, did I say work, golf, birthday parties, kids, etc… la la la la la!
I’ll see you all really soon, thanks so much for the awesome inspiration everyone, and keep on keeping on!
Week in Review
Posted by: | CommentsI have not really had that much of an opportunity to work on the blog, website or even the information that I post or the workouts… In other words, I have been slacking, and I apologize.
Nutrition:
This week has been horrible for me in that it was my birthday, my twins birthday, and Valentines Day. For my birthday, I went to one of the best Steak Houses in the nation (Bob’s here in Dallas) and ended up getting the 1lb (16 oz.) Filet Mignon. That’s right, ONE FULL POUND OF MEAT! Don’t even look to the right of the carrot, which I didn’t eat, as there are skillet potatoes with gravy on top. Delicious, yes, but nutritious, no………
Other than that, I had some sweets, some alcohol and some pizza. All in all, it was literally the worst week for me this year! That being said, my weight did not go up all that much, it went up .4 lbs. I attribute that to the fact that I did not work out much at all this week because of the achilles injury that I wrote about earlier this week. Today I will be having a burger for lunch, but then after that, I really need to get back into it! I need the motivation and determination from inside for me to make those good choices, and stick to it!
Not only that, but now I need to get my cholesterol down.
<—– That does NOT help.
Training:
So on Sunday I tried to get a little run in, but my Achilles is still bothering me, but I have been stretching it out and keeping the Kinesio tape on it. I should be able to slowly run this weekend, as I need to really start working on it. I will just have to battle through the pain should I not be able to run hard or far. With the Rock and Roll Half Marathon coming up in about a month, there needs to be some acclimation for me, and I cannot take too much more time off.
I did get in a swim this week, which was awesome! My first time in the pool this year and I was able to go about 1000 meters. I did 4 sets of 250, with about a 2 minute break in between. I really enjoyed my H20 Audio setup, and think that it really helped me stay in the pool and work through a little bit of fatigue.
Tomorrow I will hit up the bike, as I have a ride with a friend and then Sunday a run on the treadmill to see where things are. Wish me luck on recovery!
GOALS:
I really have to focus on everything this week, I am starting to slack off, and that is not good. I need to focus on eating healthier, and getting in some good runs and workouts. I need to start working out in the mornings again, but need to have some good movies to watch while I am on the bike… Any thoughts on that?
Goals for the Diet, I am going to get back into documenting every meal and working with the Weight Watchers to see where my point value is going. Get back on that horse! DO IT!
MUSIC:
Really into Kid Cudi right now, I haven’t put him on my workout mix as of yet, and there have been some major changes, but Tobacco is still going strong on there.
On Track!
Posted by: | CommentsWhat a great weekend! The Snow is gone, it is sunny outside, the Green Bay Packers won the Superbowl, and I ran 9.1 miles in 1:44 yesterday.
Luckily, I don’t feel as though that is a big accomplishment, but it does signify to me that my fitness level is returning, and that if I continue down this path that I am going, making adjustments where I need to, I will be where I want to be!
Nutrition:
When I started on the first, I was about 256 pounds, and my fitness level was pretty low. Over the past few weeks I have had some bad days, some good days, and some REALLY BAD days. As of this morning I was at 248 pounds and as I said, my fitness level is quite up. I really think that these past 2 weeks I have had just too many “untracked” (in Weight Watcher) meals, thinking to myself, I know that I have been working out pretty well, so I can have a bad meal. That is simply not the case, I never can eat just what I want to eat… I need to understand how it works for me, and what the nutrients are doing to me! What the bad calories are and what the good fats are. I have been doing some research online, and luckily a lot of my Twitter Peeps are nutrition and fitness junkies, so I have been able to really look into it. There are some things that I will not be able to do and those decisions are going to be tough for me to make. One of which was this weekend when I made a Pork Butt for pork taco’s. All in all, not “that” bad for you, but I didn’t need to have 3 big ones! Portion control when I do eat bad… portion control!
Fitness:
Last week was a rough week with the snow! I was able to get a few rides in, but it was exhausting sitting at home all day long, I could not pull the trigger to get on the treadmill. The twins didn’t really get an opportunity to burn off a lot of steam during the day, so they didn’t get all worn out like I would have liked. This put their bedtime (when they actually went to sleep) a little back from the normal time. So when they DID go to sleep I really wanted to just get in bed myself. Plus it was cold and nasty out, the perfect snuggle weather sitting at home in bed! :-) That being said, I suited up on Sunday and headed out to White Rock Lake. I had a great run of 9.1 miles and averaged about 11:25 per mile. That pace is a good pace for me! My legs were a little sore, but really was not all that bad! Look at DailyMile should you want to see my comments on the wind. In fact, if you go to DailyMile, connect with me, I would love to train with you!!
Music:
Girl Talk. That is the name of a dude that mixes music together on his laptop. Awesome stuff, look for a post about it later this week!
Goals this Week:
Get my 3 runs in this week, 2 bike rides at least, and get to the freaking pool once!!!! I really want to swim, just need to motivate to get to the pool!
